AX’RYON

What just happened? One moment Lee’yah was under me locked in my embrace, the next, gone with a scream.

I jumped up and launched myself back into the pool with my spear.

There under the water, Lee’yah fought with Ty’zir and his many vexatious tentacles.

The meddlesome wretch.

I grabbed her and gave Ty’zir my fiercest roar. He would feel the end of my spear if he didn’t let go of her.

He dropped her immediately, and I pulled her back to the surface, helping her out of the water.

“What the fuck… was that?!!” she yelled, getting to her feet and running to the opposite side of the cave. “He was like half-man, half-octopus!”

Ty’zir emerged from the water, his thick, rolling tentacles lifting him up onto the sandy cave floor. “Sorry! Sorry! I was just playing!”

I groaned, trying to control my anger, as I rubbed a hand over my face. “Lee’yah, this is Ty’zir, my Kisq’ali brother. He lacks all social skill and has terrible timing.”

Ty’zir threw me a look and crossed his bulky arms. “My timing is impeccable. I just thought I would have a little fun. I saw you two zooming through the pool, then got an eyeful when I surfaced.” He waggled his eyebrows.

“Watch yourself, Ty,” I threatened. “Lee’yah almost drowned just moments ago.”

His onyx eyes widened. “Oh, my apologies, Lee’yah. I meant no harm.”

Lee’yah was still backed against the wall, her mouth open as she stared. “You… you don’t have legs,” she stammered. “Or a lower half… well, except for the…”

“What language is she speaking? I can’t understand her.” He grabbed a hold of one of his tentacles and flopped it around. “Is she staring at these?”

She nodded along with me. “She’s not used to seeing species like us,” I explained. “Lee’yah is my mate.”

“Ax…” Lee’yah warned.

“You bonded? And on your twenty-five star cycle! Congratulations, brother.” He slapped my back with a tentacle, then studied Lee’yah. “But what is she? She doesn’t look like any of our clans.”

“She’s human. From planet Earth,” I said.

“She’s from a different planet? Could this prove our histories true?”

“Possibly. We’re not sure how she got here.” I smiled, recalling how we first met. “She was unconscious in front of the cave when I found her, then the cave entrance collapsed after we’d taken shelter in it. We were stuck together. It seems the fates fancy themselves comedians, much like you.”

“Funny,” Ty deadpanned, rolling his tongue over his teeth.

“How did you get into the pool?” I asked.

“There’s another opening under the water toward the east. It leads out onto the Lryxii shore.”

“Hmm… I’m sure the opening is deep down,” I said, looking toward Lee’yah.

“Don’t even think about it,” she said, shaking her head. “I’m done with underwater passages.”

Ty nodded. “Very deep.”

I cursed. “Lee’yah doesn’t have gills.”

“I noticed.” He looked her up and down. “But she sure is beautiful.”

I beamed, despite how much I disliked his ogling her. “I know.”

Lee’yah’s cheeks flushed, though she kept rubbing her arms. I’m sure she was cold and confused. “I’m planning to take her through a passage that heads out into the Hexzif forest.
